In December 2023, Nostrand Houses, located in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood in Brooklyn, is the first NYCHA development to vote to become a Public Housing Preservation Trust site. This is a historic moment for New York City public housing, as 808 residents, 56% of whom were Heads of Households, voted in this democratic process. Ensuring their voices were heard, and they had ownership in shaping the future of their homes.

The Trust plans on collaborating with residents and stakeholders throughout the duration of the project to ensure that resident voices are heard and included. We want residents to be active collaborators in the various processes like design to vendor selection. The Trust and NYCHA will host meetings near Nostrand Houses to inform residents and other stakeholders of the project process.

           About the project

We’re making crucial investments to improve accessibility, circulation, and appearance at Broadway Junction, Brooklyn's third largest subway station serving the A C J Z L lines. We’ll complete critical state of good repair work, including improving, reinforcing, and refinishing platforms and passageways.

ADA accessibility at Broadway Junction will be transformative for the public realm around the station. This project complements other critical infrastructure investments occurring simultaneously in the area, including:

A sweeping $500 million investment to modernize Broadway Junction, one of Brooklyn's busiest transit hubs, is now underway.

However, some community leaders worry the overhaul of the transit hub at the intersection of East New York, Brownsville, and Bed-Stuy will gentrify the neighborhood as private developers submit proposals alongside public infrastructure upgrades.

The vision of Todt Hill Houses residents for their upgraded homes is taking shape as NYCHA and the design-build team, Community Modernization Group (CMG), unveiled a mock apartment showcasing resident-selected designs in early October.

The fully renovated apartment features the top two design options chosen by residents — “monochrome” and “cool” — providing residents a preview of the colors, finishes, and overall design for their future homes. They include modernized equipment and infrastructure, upgraded plumbing and electrical systems, and critical improvements to eliminate leaks, lead based paint, and mold; enhance ventilation; and reduce pests. These are homes residents can be comfortable, safe, and proud of.”

The New York Public Library celebrated the reopening of its newly renovated 125th Street branch in East Harlem on Wednesday.

The 120-year-old landmark building had been closed since August 2021 for the “top-to-bottom” makeover, with the reopening delayed due to proposed budget cuts, the NYPL said in a release.

The branch was one of five historic libraries in “under-resourced neighborhoods” selected for modernization as part of the library’s Carnegie Renovation Program, the release said.

The building was previously plagued by leaks, and had “a dilapidated third floor unfit for public use,” according to the release.

Renovations included technology upgrades, new energy-efficient windows, new heating and cooling systems, new accessible restrooms and a new elevator, as well as a new teen center and renovated children’s floor.

The upgrades will help improve efficiency and bring the Complex to ADA-compliance. According to the release, the Broadway Junction transfer station sees 100,000 passengers come through, and the design upgrades will work to enhance those passengers with disabilities. The design service includes the addition of seven elevators to three subway stations and the replacement of three escalators. As well, crews will add new ADA-compliant staircases and walkways along with “improved lighting, wayfinding signage, a passenger transfer bridge between a subway station and bus station and a pedestrian bridge enabling transitions between two subway stations above surface street traffic.” There will also be upgrades made to communications and mechanical, electrical, fire protection and plumbing systems.

In 2021, the New York Public Library broke ground to completely renovate five original Carnegie libraries in high-needs communities with a new set of design standards: Port Richmond in Staten Island, 125th Street and Fort Washington in Manhattan, and Hunts Point and Melrose in the South Bronx. The projects, managed by Mitchell Giurgola and CannonDesign, will preserve the historic character of the branches while modernizing the interior and maximizing and expanding public space to serve today’s library patrons.

This is the story of an immigrant, coming to America in the 1880s, building an empire, and donating most of his millions to fund public libraries across the country. The man was Andrew Carnegie, who arrived in the U.S. at the age of thirteen with his family from Scotland. His family was dirt poor, but young Carnegie’s world opened up when he was invited to spend Saturday afternoons at a local private library by a wealthy Pittsburgh man. It was then that he resolved that if he would ever obtain wealth, it should be used to establish free libraries.

In 2020 the Historic Districts Council was successful in creating a thematic State and National Register Historic District for all the Carnegie Libraries in New York City. This is important not only because of the historical research but because it provides a variety of incentives for the libraries: they ware now eligible for special funding of capital needs, demolitions or serious alterations will be prevented, and any appropriate alterations, renovations or restorations will have the added benefit of guidance from the New York State Office of Historic Preservation. Officials are still distributing money to flood victims, and some people are still waiting for new homes to be built. Helen Bernard, who lives in south Houston in the Sugar Valley Community, said after floodwater damaged her home the Texas General Land Office or GLO stepped in to rebuild it last year. “I walk around some time and want to slap myself because I don’t think it’s real,” she said. The 70-year-old said her old home had a lot of problems, and it was time for an upgrade. “I didn’t have central air. I had window units. I had space heaters for heating. I didn’t have a dishwasher. I have one now. The slab was cracked, and the water would come inside the home,” she said. Bernard is one of 3,600 Texans who had their home rebuilt by the GLO. The state received about $5.6 billion in recovery funds to help people who suffered. Bernard said the application process was easy.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) approved the state of Florida's Action Plan for Hurricane Michael recovery. DEO is now in the process of launching Rebuild Florida programs to assist homeowners and communities affected by Hurricane Michael.

Though our Rebuild Florida Centers are not open to the public, they have continued to take calls and provide services for homeowners impacted by Hurricane Irma. We will update you as we begin to reopen centers for in-person assistance. Homeowners can still contact the Rebuild Florida Customer Center at 844-833-1010 or their Rebuild Florida Specialist during this time.

NEW YORK — Construction on two more temporary hospitals is underway in New York as COVID-19 cases surge.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a news briefing Thursday that construction has begun on the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, which will add 750 hospital beds, and a health care facility in Staten Island that will treat coronavirus patients.

The two new locations are in addition to several sites the state has converted into facilities to treat patients with conditions other than COVID-19 in order to free up space in hospitals for those infected with the virus. Health officials estimate that the state will need capacity for between 70,000 and 110,000 people.

Founder/President Kristine Sinkez believes the expansion is perfectly aligned with the company's mission to drive dramatic growth through organic sales, superior performance and enhanced client satisfaction. "Recovery and resiliency efforts in the wake of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria are anticipated to take years to complete, and local communities may find it overwhelming to navigate the labyrinth of federal and state agencies to fund their projects despite the influx of billions of dollars of aid," Kristine said. "The frequency of severe weather events and hurricanes impacting the Gulf and Caribbean are likely to increase in the coming years. It is imperative these communities not only recover from the last disaster but also invest in mitigation and resilience efforts to prepare for the next."

NEW YORK— Today, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Council Member Debi Rose announced the City would invest $5.7 million to renovate a community center at the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Mariner’s Harbor Houses on Staten Island. The renovated community center will expand the Department of Youth and Community Development’s (DYCD) Cornerstone Program at Mariner’s Harbor Houses, providing an additional 150 residents with access to quality, community-based programming in two facilities that span more than 5000 square feet. The renovation is expected to be completed in early 2020.
